With the damage to the external polymer layer of composite flexible pipe as the entry point, this paper established clear technical specifications for the external polymer layer by referencing relevant API standards. It further analyzed a case of external polymer layer damage that occurred during the flexible pipe installation process in a specific oilfield development project, identifying the root causes and detailing the remedial actions taken. The study reveals that construction-related quality issues leading to external polymer layer damage can be categorized into four key factors: flexible pipe material quality, installation procedures, personnel operations during construction, and mechanical damage. In response to damage caused during the reverse connection process, the minimum operational bending radius was revised from 4.5 m to 5.0 m. Regarding the cracking and wrinkling observed during offshore installation, the study confirms through cause analysis, theoretical analysis, and experimental comparison that the crystallinity and lowtemperature toughness of the external polymer layer material meet the required performance standards. Furthermore, the research investigated the causes of damage resulting from the plough burial process during offshore installation and proposed corresponding mitigation measures. The findings of this study serve as a reference for understanding relevant standards and enhancing quality control of external polymer layers in similar engineering projects.
