Tie-in construction is a crucial process of subsea pipeline installation, involving significant operational challenges, long duration, and high risks. The challenge gets greater when the pipeline has a bend. In order to verify the feasibility of tie-in construction for a large-diameter pipeline with a bend and control the fatigue damage, a tie-in construction scheme for bends was proposed based on the collaborative operation of two lifting barges. Motion response of the barges under the designed sea conditions was analyzed with the hydrodynamic analysis tool MOSES to obtain the barge response amplitude operator (RAO) and determine the motion characteristics. A fatigue life split between operation, as laid, and installation of 80%, 10%, and 10% was considered. By means of OFFPIPE and ANSYS, the analysis was carried out on fatigue damage before and after tow segment pipelines jointed during installation. The feasibility of the proposed tie-in construction scheme was confirmed by the analysis results. It is concluded that sea bend can be used to change the subsea pipeline route direction in a mild sea area. Proper construction of windows and barges can effectively control fatigue damage.
