Shore-based towing construction is a critical phase in submarine pipeline landing operations. Traditional methods, particularly in long-distance shore-based towing construction, often rely on linear winches as the primary onshore towing equipment. However, these conventional approaches face challenges such as difficult equipment positioning, limited resource availability, and high construction costs. In the Huizhou’s ethylene feedstock pipeline project, an innovative construction method of “collaborative shore-based towing by directional drilling rig and pipelaying vessel” was successfully implemented, marking its first engineering application in China. This paper systematically elaborated on the process flow, key control points, and equipment selection criteria of this novel approach. It focused on core technologies, including precise positioning of the drilling rig, calculation of pipeline pullback force, equipment matching optimization, and verification of process parameters. Furthermore, based on field-measured data, the economic feasibility and engineering applicability of this technology were validated. The findings provide replicable engineering practices and technical references for future long-distance shore-based towing construction under complex geological conditions.
